Popularity

To be adored is not something to be coveted. It is a lonely position on top, and most people you come across will give you two predictable reactions – they will either join the fan club or be prejudiced against you from things they have undoubtedly heard without bothering to prove. And then you find yourself in the unenviable position of either trying to live up to their expectations or trying to disprove their prejudiced assumptions. At the end, you rarely manage to satisfy anyone, least of all yourself – for you find that in the process, you have had to sacrifice your individuality, independence, and frequently, your principles.
